Funding and assessment

Sweden's university colleges and newer universities can apply for funding from The Knowledge Foundation. Our funding goes to the university and the project manager who will run the project applies. Detailed information on how an application must be designed in order to be assessed can be found in the respective programme's call text.

Apply for funding

Structure your application

All applications to The Knowledge Foundation are submitted via our application system SBS Manager. The application must be submitted by the project leader, who creates a personal account in the portal.

Documents for the application

Make sure that the application includes all the information and details requested, including appendices. You can update and add to your application up until the deadline.

How applications are assessed

Programme-specific processes

The application assessment process may differ between our different programmes. You will find information about the programme-specific handling and timetable in the respective programme's Call for proposal.

External assessors are required

All applications that are received by The Knowledge Foundation and meet the program's formal requirements are reviewed by external assessments panel. Each programme has its own assessment panel that is appointed after each call. The assessment panels consist of people from academia and industry.

The assessment process

Review of formal requirements

The Knowledge Foundation checks that the application is correctly completed and meets the requirements of the call. This may include, for example, confirming that the project leader holds a doctoral degree and that participating partners have signed their letters of intent.

We recruit international peer reviewers

In several of our programmes, the scientific or artistic quality of applications is assessed by international expert researchers. For each application, we appoint two or three reviewers who possess strong expertise in the relevant subject area. Their evaluations are then submitted to our assessment panels.

External reviewers begin their individual assessments

Specially appointed external review panels are responsible for the overall evaluation and prioritisation of the applications. The panels consist of knowledgeable individuals from academia, industry, and wider society. Each application is reviewed by several different panel members.

Hearings are conducted, if applicable

In several of our programmes, we conduct digital hearings in connection with the review panel meetings. The hearing provides applicants with an opportunity to clarify their application and allows the panel to ask supplementary questions.

Joint evaluation and ranking of applications

Once all reviewers have completed their individual assessments, the review panel meets for a joint discussion. Together, the panel reaches a consensus on the evaluation and ranking of the applications. The meeting results in a final recommendation on which applications should be approved and which should be declined.

Decision by the CEO or the Board

Based on the recommendation of the review panels, the final funding decision is made by the CEO or the Board of the Knowledge Foundation. You will be notified of the decision by email, along with the panel’s written justification.
